“Flamenco Crew”
We have a fabulous lineup of professional musicians who all have a love of the flamenco idiom.
Flamenco singer, Rafael Alcolea is from Córdoba, Andalucia in Spain – the birth place of Flamenco. The strong Arabic influence in Córdobes flamenco reflects pain and passion and is hauntingly apparent in Rafael’s voice.
Flamenco guitarist, Robbie Varga – “El Chispa” has been playing flamenco since childhood. He performed in Spain in “Tablaos” – regarded as the best place to learn the rhythms and singing accompaniment.
Bernie White is a local guitarist who has played with and for some of Australia’s premier flamenco artists. He has accompanied flamenco dance for more than 25 years.
Flautist, Alegria Tomás studied classical flute at the NSW Conservatorium of Music with Jane Rutter in the late ’80s. Since then she has followed her passion for Latin music, performing and recording Brazilian, Latin American folk, Tango and more recently flamenco music.
Flamenco Dancers and hand percussionists, Elena Lorenzo Varga and Veronica Gillmer add the colour and movement to this amazing group. Elena is also an accomplished singer and cajón percussionist.
Our very handsome narrator, Guillermo (Will) Sande, joins us as our special “tavern owner” when we present our theatre show. Will has studied theatre in his homeland in northern Spain where he performed in variety shows in the late ’80s and ’90s. He co-wrote a book with his actress leader Greta Blanco before coming to Australia 10 years ago. His appearance and narration in our productions adds a spontaneous and joyful layer of continuity.
Classes are available in flamenco and classical guitar, flute, clarinet, saxophone and bass.
